Until recently, I hadn’t either. But, Martin Luther King, Jr had. In fact, his famous 1963 Letter From Birmingham Jail names her as one of only five southern whites he could count on as allies. He wrote that she was a white southerner whose rejection of her segregationist upbringing was both “eloquent and prophetic.”
