Well, even when you are as old as I, you’re never too old to learn something new. I was quite unaware that Wisdom is personified in the Book of Proverbs, Chapter 8, and that she speaks directly to us and reminds us that “the Lord brought me forth as the first of his works, before his deeds of old.”
With this introduction to Lady Wisdom, Reverend Love taught us a great deal about her. She is not Knowledge, she can’t be learned. She is not Understanding but she is Truth beyond our ability to sometimes understand. Our church’s slogan is “God is Still Speaking.” Well, “Wisdom is Still Speaking” too and we would be wise to pay attention. She has been around a long time and knows a thing or two.
Following the service, Reverend Love presided at a very enlightening coffee hour conversation on the topic of “Getting Free.” Attendees were paired off and, while one partner listened the other spoke about what prevents them from being free. Each partner had three minutes to speak and three to just listen.
Then we changed partners and tackled the question of what it means to be free. After each round, we shared what we had learned. This seemingly simple exercise turned out to be something rather profound. If you would like to share in this experience, a recording of the coffee hour conversation is available here. Reverend Love is an astute teacher and her next conversation with us on July 10 will certainly be stimulating as well.
My thanks to Emily Parker, Magda, and her friend Aurora for providing the refreshments. I hope more of you can join us in person in the summer Sundays to come. We miss seeing you there.
Until next time,
Bruce
