Happy Halloween and Go Nats!
While not a baseball watcher, I’m delighted our home team won the World Series! And, I hope you Watch Party revelers got some sleep. Happily, you’ll get an extra hour this Saturday night, so remember to set back your clocks!
Sadly, it appears rain may dampen the costumes (if not spirits) of this evening’s Trick or Treaters. However, this is only the first of three linked holidays: Halloween (All Hallows Eve), All Saints (Hallows) Day, and All Soul’s Day. So, if your Halloween fun gets rained out, come celebrate All Soul’s this Sunday. Our morning service will honor losses, remember those we have loved and lost, and celebrate the support we share with one another. With lots of candles!
2020 Stewardship Campaign—This year’s theme is Reaching In, Reaching Out, as we continue practicing love of God, neighbor, and self. Our 2020 pledge goal is $261,500, which is a <2% increase over our 2019 goal. We hope you’ll slightly increase the amount of your annual stewardship pledge and pledge to the capital campaign. As we’ve noted, a stewardship pledge differs from a capital campaign pledge in that one funds our annual operating budget, the other major capital expenses. Both are necessary, and I’ve pledged to each. Thank you so much for joining me in support of these two campaigns!
Mission & Social Action—This Sunday after worship we’ll gather in the parlor for a conversation about the mission and social action component of our 2nd Century Campaign—Renewing Our Foundations. Our congregation is passionate about the importance of charitable giving, and we tithe (give 10%) of ALL income to groups working to make the world more peaceful, loving, and just. We also volunteer. As part of the 2nd Century Campaign, we want to open ourselves to new possibilities by listening for God’s response to the question, “what next?” Perhaps we’ll be led to work with others in a new part of town. Perhaps we’ll be called to stay put and create something right here. Who knows? But, please, come and be part of the process. Let’s see what God has in store!
Looking Ahead—My ten-year anniversary with our church is 2021, just a little over a year away. It’s hard to believe I’ve been here almost a decade! I’m proud of all we have done during this time, and I wonder what God has in heart and mind for our future. Inevitably, our work on the capital campaign, pilot project, and ongoing life of our church will point us in some new and different directions. Perhaps our entrance will look different due to becoming physically accessible. Maybe we’ll welcome more and different people into our sanctuary and parlor for worship and other program offerings. Maybe we’ll decide to travel and connect with people different from ourselves. The key word is different. As we move ahead, I pray we will all be open to new possibilities, knowing that growth of mind, body, and spirit always includes change.
There are far better things ahead than any we leave behind. – C.S. Lewis
