100th Anniversary Greetings!
This Sunday, 3/11, our congregation will celebrate its 100th Anniversary as a worshiping community. Our first worship service as Cleveland Park Congregational Church was held in March 1918 in a temporary wood building in what is now our side yard. Five years later, we celebrated our first service in the present sanctuary!
I hope you’ll join us Sunday for a service of music and memory as we share favorite hymns and meaningful moments from the life of our congregation. Our Music Director, Dorothy Mora, and her mother, Georgiana P. Dunham, have commissioned a special 100th Anniversary anthem to be performed by the choir. You won’t want to miss it!
As we move toward Easter, there are many opportunities for us to serve God and neighbor. First, our children and youth will put together Easter Baskets for homeless families on 3/11 and 3/18. They need your help! Please bring any of the following donations by this Sunday, 3/11: gift cards for grocery stores like Safeway and Giant, chocolate, chewing gum, chapstick, and other small toiletry items. Thank you!
Our congregation will also participate in the following march and rally. Please email email@example.com if you’d like to join us (and receive updates).
March for our Lives, 3/24—We’ll gather with UCC members and others from around the country for a gun violence prevention march in DC. There will also be opportunities to lobby the day before the march (3/23). A Minnesota teen who’s traveling to DC with his UCC conference wrote: As a member of the UCC, I believe in the notion that “God is still speaking.” However… our actions are God’s words. …nothing will change until we convince the legislature (on the state or federal level) to make laws that protect our fellow citizens from unspeakable harm. For more information: March for our Lives UCC.
Unite to End Racism Rally, 4/4—On the 50th anniversary of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination, the National Council of Churches (NCC) is gathering people from across the country to remember the past, recognize King’s work, and launch a comprehensive effort to end racism. The UCC will be actively engaged in this multi-year initiative. April 4 begins with a silent prayer walk to the mall, followed by an interfaith prayer service before the rally. April 5 is a lobby day. For more information: Rally to End Racism.
As I wrote recently, we have two new authors in our midst, David Finnegan-Hosey and Chessy Prout! Both books are “must reads” in today’s culture, one focused on mental health and the other on sexual violence. Both are also deeply personal, brave accounts of the authors’ experiences. For information about upcoming DC events please visit: Christ on the Psych Ward and I Have the Right to (note: it’s the Politics and Prose at The Wharf).
Finally, please remember to Spring Forward this Saturday evening; we want to see you Sunday morning!
Peace and Blessings,
