At Cleveland Park Congregational UCC, we believe it is important not only to focus on our church but also to reach out to our local, regional, and international communities. We do this through participating in both mission and social action (charity and justice) activities, maintaining partnerships with important community groups, and contributing financially to non-profit organizations and UCC special offerings.
Our primary areas of focus are:
- Racial Justice
- Immigrants and Refugees
- Homelessness and Poverty (including at-risk youth)
- LGBTQ+ Issues
- Environment and Creation Care
We are also concerned about Elder Care and Substance Abuse and offer free space to multiple twelve step groups and our neighborhood’s senior village.
Examples of activities we have done in recent years include: the Walk to End HIV and Help the Homeless Walk-a-thon; Community Clean Ups; volunteering with Meals-on-Wheels and the local food pantry; delivering groceries to low-income seniors; sending weekly volunteers to an after school program for low-income youth; collecting food and clothing for homeless shelters; and participating in racial justice rallies and campaigns. Our high school youth go on a mission/work trip each year. And, we have a growing relationship with the DC-based asylum seeker assistance organization, AsylumWorks.
Our congregation tithes (donates 10% of all income) to charitable organizations working in our primary areas of focus. These donations and all related activities are governed by the Mission & Social Action Committee, which meets bi-monthly. If you are interested in joining the committee or participating in a mission project, please contact our Mission Chair at info@cpcchurch.org.
