What Do I Wear?
Dress is casual and services last for an hour and fifteen minutes. Following worship, all are welcome to join us for “the finest Coffee Hour in Christendom.”
How Do I Get There?
We’re at the corner of Lowell and 34th Streets NW, diagonally across from the John Eaton Elementary School. We don’t have a parking lot, but there is ample free street parking available. We are a 20-minute walk from the Cleveland Park Metro Station and a 3-block walk east from Wisconsin Avenue. The closest bus lines are 31 and 33 (on Wisconsin Ave) and 96 (which stops on Woodley near the National Cathedral).
Where Do I Go When I Arrive?
Someone will welcome you at the entrance, offer you a worship bulletin, and answer any questions you may have. We have accessible bathrooms to the right of the front door and the sanctuary is straight ahead. Please take a seat wherever you feel comfortable.
What is a Typical Sunday Like?
Our faith is over two thousand years old. Our thinking is not.
Our Sunday worship service reflects our inclusive, united, and uniting denomination. Services begin with a music prelude, call to worship, community prayer, and time for reflection. We continue with “a time for all ages,” scripture reading, sermon, and sharing of joys and concerns. We sing a couple of hymns during the service, and our organist, choir, and instrumentalists offer additional music. Rev. Ellen Jennings preaches most Sundays, with a congregation member or guest preacher adding their perspective periodically.These sermons interpret scripture through an historical and literary lens while addressing real-life questions and concerns.
Following each Sunday service, we join together for what has been lovingly labeled “the finest Coffee Hour in Christendom.” This warm and welcoming time of fellowship features a variety of treats prepared by our members.
After Coffee Hour, we frequently offer an Adult Programs event, including workshops, presentations, and discussions.
What About My Children?
If you have a child, we have a place for them in our hearts, our worship service, and our Sunday School. Children participate in a portion of each Sunday’s worship service and then join our excellent Sunday School teachers for class around 11:00 am. They’re also welcome to stay in the service.
For infants and toddlers we offer free, skilled childcare from 10:15 to 11:45 am each Sunday. They are, of course, also welcome in the sanctuary.
We believe children should be both seen and heard, and we look forward to hearing their unique perspectives during the Time for All Ages each Sunday.
Is the Church Accessible?
Yes, we have a ramp that provides access to the front door, and a greeter will be there to welcome you. Our accessible restroom is to the right of the front door. If you come at a time other than Sunday morning, please contact us at gro.hcruhccpc@ofni or 202-3633-8211 so someone can be present to open the door for you.
For those with vision or hearing impairments, we have large print hymnals, closed captioned streaming, and hearing devices connected to our sound system.
